1. Use Modal Verbs
There are two modal verbs we often use for giving advice: ‘should’ and ‘ought to’. The difference is after ‘should’ we use an infinitive without ‘to’. Meanwhile, we always use ‘to’ in ‘ought to’ for giving advice. Let’s see the examples!
Should:
You should do exercises.
You should not spend too much.
Ought to:
You ought to do exercises.
You ought not to spend too much.
2. Make it into a Question
To make advice less direct, we can use a question to make the person we are advising consider about the advice we are giving them. Let’s see the examples! Why don’t you do some exercises? How about doing some exercises?
3. Put yourself in the Person’s Position
If someone is asking for your advice, it’s useful to imagine yourself being in that person’s position. Let’s see the example!
Example:
If I were you, I would do more exercise.
4. Make a Suggestion
A suggestion or recommendation is another good way of giving advice that isn’t too direct. You can use the words ‘suggest’ or ‘recommend’ as in the example below!
Example:
I would suggest doing more exercise.
I would recommend doing more exercise.
Use ‘verb + ing’ after ‘suggest’ or ‘recommend’ to explain your advice to the
listener.
Example Verb:
Do Doing
Task!

Based on the explanation above, try to make an example from each ways of giving an advice!
