A freegan is someone who only eats food
obtained for free. The freegan lifestyle involves salvaging discarded food that
is still edible and nutritious. Freegans obtain the food they eat through
donations, finds, or searching in bins (or dumpsters) for food that has been
thrown away by shops. Some freegans will buy food that they consider socially
conscious, but only eat other foods if they are free and eating them will
prevent unnecessary waste.
Freeganism is an anti-consumerist
lifestyle, based on limited participation in the conventional economy and
minimal consumption of resources. Freegans embrace community, generosity,
social concern, freedom, cooperation, and sharing in opposition to a society
they consider to be based on materialism, moral apathy, competition,
conformity, and greed.
The freegan movement has its roots in
the anti-globalization and environmentalist movements that sprang up in the
1990’s. most freegans salvage the food not because they are poor or homeless,
but as a political statement.
The word freegan is a blend of two other English words: free and vegan. Words
made by combining two existing words o make a new one are known as portmanteau words.
